Winter Guard
After the Fall Marching Band season is over, Winter Guard season begins. Referred to as the “Sport of the Arts”, Winter Guard combines the elements of music, dance and military like precision. It is a performance art in which guard members perform a choreographed routine using flags, sabers and rifles. Guards are judged on use of equipment, movement, ensemble analysis and general effect. There are hundreds of Winter Guard teams across the United States and throughout the world.
Each week, the Newtown Winter Guards will travel to MAC (Musical Arts Conference), USBands (United States Scholastic Band Association), WGI (Winter Guard International), SWC (South West Conference) or other competitions where they will compete against guards in their class. Newtown has three Winter Guard units: Scholastic Open (Varsity), Scholastic AAA (JV), and Junior class. The Varsity Guard has in the past participated in regional WGI competitions and also in the WGI World Championships, which are held every April in Dayton, Ohio.
Signups/Tryouts for Winter Guard are held in Mid November and practice usually begins the next week. The Winter Guard competition schedule runs from January to April.
