Color Guard
Color Guard is the flash of colorful flags; light reflecting off silver sabers and the toss of wooden rifles. The jumps and transitions of our performers along with eye-catching props and costumes create a vision of wonder. It is one of the most unique programs at the High School level to see. The art of the Color Guard attracts all ages and backgrounds. The history is rooted in the military, but the use of flags, rifles, and sabers is the only thing that is traditional. Color Guard will always challenge the performer, and in turn the spectator, at every show.
Fall Marching Band and Guard is open to all students entering Newtown High School in Fall of 2021 and all current NHS students. For those who have not already had a conversation with him, parents of current 7th graders considering allowing their child to also join the High School Band & Guard are invited to contact Mr. Ovsiew before sign ups about the time and physical requirements/commitment and what they can expect from the program.
Attendance is also required at our Fall Orientation Meeting for students and parents, which will be held in June in the NHS auditorium. Sign-in starts at 6:30pm and the meeting starts at 7pm.
Attendance is mandatory at Band Camp.
After band camp, the Fall Color Guard, as a part of the NHS Marching Band & Guard, practices on Mondays and Wednesdays with the Band and also has sectional practice on Thursdays.
Unless otherwise noted, all practices will be held at Newtown High School. Please remember to bring drinks and wear sunscreen.
APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR IS MANDATORY - YOU MUST WEAR SNEAKERS! NO SANDALS OR FLIP FLOPS ALLOWED. IF YOU COME IN SANDALS OR FLIP FLOPS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PRACTICE - THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.
Rifles are not included in this fee; everyone has to provide their own rifle. Some guard members have ordered from McCormick's in the past and they have been very reliable. You are not required to order from them. Please ask your coaches or captains which rifle (and saber, if desired) you should order.
